Consider This When Purchasing a Fixer Upper

How many of you have watched one of those fixer-upper shows on HGTV or another television channel and thought, “They make that look so easy!” Or, “I can do that! Before you jump in to a home that needs a lot of TLC, ask yourself these questions to make sure you’re up for the task!

Are You Ready for a Fixer-Upper Home?

Now-a-days, fixer-uppers seem to be a popular choice, especially since people are able to restore the unique “bones” of the property while also adding their own personal, modern twist to the place. However, it’s important to make sure you’re ready to take on all the challenges of remodeling a home.

For example, consider how much time you really have to spend on the house. Do you have time to renovate the home yourself? Or do you have the additional funding to hire someone to do it for you? If you have a habit of starting a project and moving on to another project before finishing the first, you might want to reconsider a fixer-upper and instead choose a move-in ready home.

You also need to think about whether or not you will be able to live in the home while you are remodeling. If not, what are the additional costs of housing going to be? Will that fit into your budget?

Which brings us to the next item to think about—money. If you have a $250,000 budget for a home, is it better to buy a home for that amount or purchase a house that is $190,000 but needs $60,000 worth of work? While there can be a sense of personal accomplishment when it comes to fixing up a house, there can also be a lot of stress and unexpected obstacles (and costs!) that arise. Therefore, before you buy a fixer-upper, really ask yourself if it is worth it to you or not.
